What is Zithromax (Azithromycin)?
Zithromax is used to treat bacterial respiratory problems in both children and adults, including respiratory infections, as well as otitis media, sinus infections, and genital infections (including chlamydia and syphilis). Zithromax is used to treat strep throat, gonorrhea, and syphilis in addition to mild to severe bacterial acne. Many pediatric illnesses, including tonsillitis, pneumonia, otitis media, and throat infections, are treated with this medication. Zithromax should not be used to treat viral infections like the flu or a cold.
Zithromax is commonly taken orally in dosages of 250 mg and 500 mg. Often available for purchase is a generic azithromycin oral tablet with a dosage of 600 mg. On day one, a single 500 mg dosage is often given, and then twice daily for the subsequent four days, 250 mg. Zithromax is a multi-formula antibiotic that comes in dosages of 100 mg/5 mL, 200 mg/5 mL, and 1000 mg/5 mL and may be used orally or intravenously. (Solution containing 500 milligrams of azithromycin in a 100 mL vial).
